Rowing has a less well known, older sister: sculling. Races between watermen in single seat boats with a scull for each hand have taken place on the Thames since 1715, before young men from schools and universities went afloat in 'eights' which are rowed by crews with one oar each, as epitomized by the world renowned Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race, which started in 1829.
