Horton's A Hit!
The Jim Carrey/Steve Carell animation Horton Hears A Who was an elephantine hit in the US this weekend, taking $45.1 million. The Dr Seuss story, with a budget of $85 million, should have no trouble making back its costs in the next few weeks.
10,000 B.C. suffered a bit on its second week. The very poorly reviewed Roland Emmerich prehistorical epic dropped over 54% from its first week, taking $16.1 million and bringing its total to $61 million.
Fight movie Never Back Down did surprisingly well, taking the number three spot with $8.6 million. Given that it only had a budget of $20 million and a cast that is, at best, vaguely recognisable, it can be considered a sizeable success.
The same cannot be said for Doomsday, the week's only other major new entry. Neil Marshall's first film since The Descent received a rather wide release on almost 2,000 screens. Despite that, it could only manage $4.7 million, which is a lot less than both Universal and Marshall will have been hoping for from his first studio project. The Descent managed nearly double that amount on its first weekend and had a much lower budget.
